COMPETITIVE  PROGRAM

The SPACE Competitive Program provides opportunities for students to develop dance technique and performing skills to the next level with experiences not offered in our Core Program. Some of these experiences include: competitions, workshops, conventions, and travelling opportunities.

To be part of our Competitive Program, students will be registered in both Competitive Program and Core Program classes. Please see the outline on the next page for details on Competitive Program registration requirements.

Competitive Program Classes *New this Year

Competitive Program classes run from September 2021 – May 2022. Students that are registered for the Competitive Program will be placed in weekly Competitive Program classes. These classes will run weekly just as the Core Program classes do and will be an hour and a half in length. The primary focus of the Competitive Program classes will be the competitive piece of choreography for the year. Having the consistent weekly classes will allow for additional time to further progress and improve dancer’s technique and skill. This will also ensure choreography is taught and learned in a timely manner and help further develop teamwork skills and team bond. There will be no need for additional weekend rehearsals as all choreography will be learned in class.

Competitive Program classes will participate in the South Eastern Manitoba Festival (SEMF), the SPACE Annual Year End Recital, and up to 3 competitions per year. Competitive Program students will participate in at least 1 convention or workshop during the dance season as well to further their dance education and growth.

Audition Day

As part of the new Competitive Program, we will be holding an Audition Day. Students that are interested in being in the Competitive Program and would like to do a solo, duo, and/or trio are invited to attend our Audition Day. There is no cost to the Audition Day.

The purpose of the Audition Day is to allow for an additional educational experience of what a dance audition looks like. During the Audition Day, members of the SPACE faculty will teach 3 short combinations and watch dancers perform. Dancers will also be given time to complete a short Audition Information Package including a series of short answer questions, goals for the year ahead, and interests in pieces for the upcoming year. All students in the Competitive Program will be encouraged to attend even if they have no interest in doing a solo, duo, and/or trio. The Audition Day will also give the SPACE faculty the opportunity to try different combinations of dancers to consider all options for the Competitive Program dances.

If your Competitive Program dancer is interested in taking part in the Audition Day, please notify the office.

Additional Costs to be aware of:

1.   Competition/Convention Fees- up to 3 competitions per year and up to 1 Convention/Workshop

2.   Choreography Fees- additional choreography fees will be issued for those who accepted any solo/duo/trio offers

3.    Travel Costs (A bit of history… We typically like to rotate between Canada and U.S locations each year. However due to the dollar and more recently COVID-19, we have been staying in Canada.) We choose our travel competition/convention by the start of the season to allow families enough time to plan.

4.   Costuming
